Apex – You should be hereFebruary 23, 2018 8:45 pm
Day two of our Okanagan ski trip found us winding through the beautiful mountains on our way up to Apex Mountain Resort. We’re always a fan of beautiful drives and this one, is no exception. You know you’re getting close when you start to see the most wonderfully cozy cabins lining the road. Scattered among the trees are small A frame and steiner arch homes. Each one is different and unique and looks like the ideal place to come back to after a long day on the hill. We had a chilly start to the day but we need a lot more than a bit of wind and cold to stop us!
Apex is located 30 minutes from Penticton in the Okanagan Valley. We loved the big, steep mountain terrain. It was exactly what we were looking for! It was completely dumping while we were riding so every run continued to get better and better as the powder started piling up. Up and down we went, finding fresh lines and exploring the Blue and Black runs that Apex is so well known for. When our legs needed a rest, we were easily able to find wide open green runs, perfect for any level skier or snowboarder. The line-ups for the chairlifts were non-existent but you’ll never find us complaining about that! If you’ve ever been to any resort in the Okanagan, you’ll have no doubt heard about “Champagne Powder” At Apex, it wasn’t hard to find. It completely covered us as we slashed through the trees and onto the runs.
When toes and fingers needed a warm up we headed to the Gun Barrel Saloon for a heaping plate of nachos which were devoured in no time. After the fact, we found out that the Gun Barrel is the #1 Apres Ski Bar in Canada – FOR 10 YEARS IN A ROW! Its not hard to see why either. The walls are decorated with memorabilia from years past, the fire burns hot and the views are directly onto the Mountain.
Apex has something for everyone. There’s the obvious skiing and snowboarding but beyond that you can find tubing, skating around their famous 1 km loop or a game of hockey on their in village rink. There’s extensive Nordic areas to be explored and back country snowmobile tours. Today we stuck to the slopes and had a truly incredible day. Apex is absolutely worth exploring. Stay for the morning, the day or the week. We wished we could’ve stayed longer because we know that tomorrow is going to be another beautiful powder filled day. After so many years in the Okanagan, our visit to Apex was LONG overdue and totally worth it. Without a doubt we’ll be back and until that time – we’ll be missing you.
